iMessage is the Apple messaging service you get automatically with your Apple ID.If it's not already set up, you're asked to sign in when you first open the Messages app. Sign in with same Apple ID that you use with Messages on your iPhone and other devices. It's usually the same Apple ID that you use for iCloud, the iTunes Store, the App Store, and the account you created when you first set up your Mac.

Have a conversation

  1. Click at the top of the Messages window.
  2. Address your message by typing the recipient's name, email address, or phone number. Or click and choose a recipient. If they're in your Contacts app, Messages finds them as you type. To start a group conversation, just add more recipients.
  3. Type your message in the field at the bottom of the window, then press Return to send it.
    • To include emoji, click.
    • To include an image or other file, just drag or paste it into the message field. Or use Continuity Camera to capture a photo or scan directly from your iPhone or iPad camera.
    • To include an audio recording, clickand record your message.
  4. After starting a conversation, click Details in the corner of the window to take other actions, including:
    • Choose not to be disturbed by notifications about this conversation.
    • Use FaceTime to start an audio call or video call .
    • Share a screen .
    • See the recipient's location—if they're sharing their location with you.
    • Review all of the photos and files that were exchanged in the conversation.
    • Add a group name, add members to a group, or leave a group. If the group has four or more members, you can remove members: Control-click the member's name, then choose Remove from Conversation.

With macOS Sierra or later, you can also use Siri to send, read, and reply to Messages:

  • ”Send a message to Susan and Johnny saying I'll be late' or ”Tell Johnny Appleseed the show is about to start” or ”Text a message to 408 555 1212.”
  • ”Read the last message from Brian Park” or ”Read my new messages.”
  • ”Reply that's great news” or ”Tell him I'll be there in 10 minutes.”

Add a Tapback to a message

macOS Sierra introduces Tapback to the Mac. A Tapback is a quick response that expresses what you think about a message, such as that you like it or think it's funny. In the image above, the heart next to ”See you then!' is a Tapback. Here's how to do it:

  1. Control-click a message bubble to open a shortcut menu.
  2. Choose Tapback from the menu.
  3. Click a Tapback to add it to the message bubble.

Your Tapback is visible to everyone in the conversation who is using iMessage with macOS Sierra or later or iOS 10 or later. Other iMessage users see 'Liked' or 'Laughed at' or 'Emphasized,' for example, followed by the text of that message.

iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch also have Tapback, as well as other message effects available only on those devices. Most such affects look the same on your Mac when you receive them. Others appear as a description of the effect, such as ”(sent with Loud Effect).”

Delete a message or conversation

When you permanently delete a message or conversation, you can't get it back. So make sure that you save important information from your messages.

To delete a message:

  1. Open a message conversation.
  2. Control-click the blank area of a message bubble that you want to delete.
  3. Choose Delete.
  4. Click Delete.

To delete a conversation:

  1. Control-click a conversation.
  2. Choose Delete Conversation.
  3. Click Delete.

On most days, you will find me sitting in front of my laptop typing away and trying to complete my work. My iPhone will be right beside me; sometimes I get a notification for an Instagram DM (Direct Message), but I don’t like the hassle of reaching for my phone. If only Mac allowed you to DM on Instagram!

While there is an Instagram app for Windows 10 users, there isn’t one for Mac yet. But fear not, we can use third-party apps. In this article, I’m going to show you two methods for Instagram DM on your Mac.

Method 1: IG:dm

IG:dm is an application designed primarily for using Instagram DM on your Mac. It is limited mainly to the DM function. Other features include being able to view users who are not following you back.

Note: This is for those of you who only want to use the Instagram DM function from your Mac. If you want to upload photos or view other users’ posts, skip this and proceed to Method 2.

Step 1: Download IG:dm

To download IG:dm, simply go to its official website and download the Mac version.

Step 2: Launch and Verify IG:dm

After launching IG:dm and logging in, you will be prompted for a code which can be retrieved from your email. Simply log into the email connected to your Instagram account and enter the code.

You will be directed to the IG:dm interface. Simply type out the Instagram handle of whoever you wish to DM and chat away! You can even upload a picture from your Mac or send emojis.

Note that you will not be able to view the Instagram posts of other users or post your own photos. This app is only for DM purposes.

Method 2: Flume

Flume works one your Mac like Instagram does on your phone. You can use the Explore page, search for users, and more. It’s available in over 25 languages. However, only the Pro version allows you to upload a photo directly from your Mac or add multiple accounts. If you want only to use the DM function, just use the free version. You can either get this app from the Flume website or subscribe to it on Setapp.

Step 1: Launch the Flume app.

It’s not very difficult to navigate Flume, but let me walk through it anyway. After opening the app, you can move your cursor over the top to resize the window or change the view of your posts from a single column to a 3×3 grid.

When you move your cursor to the bottom, you can access functions like uploading a picture, going to the Explore page, and viewing your starred posts (only the Pro version allows you to upload photos and add multiple accounts).

Step 2: Click on DM Function.

To use the DM function, click on the icon at the bottom that looks like a paper airplane.

Step 3: Enter the user’s Instagram handle.

You will see a search bar at the top. All you need to do is search for the user that you want to DM and key in their Instagram handle. For example, if I want to DM Instagram to suggest an idea for a new function, I would type ‘Instagram’ in the search bar.

All that’s left is to type your message and hit Enter. You can even send emojis and upload photos (located on the left of the chatbox) just like on your iPhone.
