Say you want to use some printers via IPP, but these require authentication with a user account. You could use this hint which was published a few days ago, and install the printer directly using an address like this: You could also do this in Tiger by holding the Option key while pressing Add. However, there are two fundamental problems with this approach. First, these printers can be used by every user on the machine, so adding printers like this only makes sense on single-user machines. Second, the account data is written to /etc/cups/printers.conf, i.e. this file contains your password in clear text (this file is only readable by administrators, though).

Fortunately, OS X 10.5 actually supports IPP printing with authentication, but Apple somehow managed to obfuscate this feature. Read on to see how to use it.

  1. In case you don't already know, there is a bug in Leopard such that you absolutely have to log in with an administrative account to add printers (identification with the lock button is not enough if you work with a non-administrative account). So login as an admin first.
  2. Click the plus sign in the Print & Fax System Preferences panel to show the Add Printer dialog. When it appears, choose IP in the toolbar, and then select Internet Printing Protocol - IPP as the protocol. Enter the server address of your CUPS server (don't try to add any account information here), the name of the printer queue, and then add the printer.
  3. Now send a print job to the printer, and you will see that, well, it doesn't work, since you didn't have to specify any account information so far.
  4. Go back to the Print & Fax pane in System Preferences. Double-click on the printer you just send the print job to. You see now that the printer is inactive and the print job was halted -- due to missing identification.
  5. Continue the print job, and suddenly, an identification dialog will pop up. Why didn't it pop up earlier? Why do we have to explicitly continue the print job? Only Apple knows. But finally, you can enter your account information and also save it in your keychain.
You should also take a look into /etc/cups/printers.conf -- there is no password there, but notice the line which reads: Evidently this line does the trick. Therefore, if you're comfortable with editing configuration files directly, adding new printers is a simple copy and paste job. By the way, the same should work with SMB printing.

Start with Step One to resolve simple issues stemming from an expired or stale credential saved in your Keychain.

Printer is on 'Hold for Authentication'

After changing your UNC Asheville Security password, or entering an incorrect password, you may receive a 'Hold for Authentication' message in the print queue window.

To resolve this issue:

  1. Click the small 'Reset' icon on the right side of the held print job (highlighted in the example image above).
  2. An authentication window appears; enter your current UNC Asheville Security credentials.
  3. Click 'OK' to send your print job.

If Step One did not resolve your issue, proceed to Step Two.

Printer Always Prompts for Credentials

You may have previously saved your UNC Asheville Security credentials in your Keychain, but have since updated your password and the save credentials are no longer valid. In this instance you will continually be prompted for your correct username and password each time you send a print job.

To resolve this issue:

  1. Open the 'Self Service' application and log in using your current UNC Asheville Security credentials.
  2. Browse to the 'System Maintenance' category listed on the right side of the screen.
  3. Find the 'Clear Saved Printer Passwords' utility and click the 'Clear' button.
  4. Read the utility's description, then click 'Clear' once more to confirm your choice.

All passwords related to UNC Asheville printers currently saved in your Keychain will be cleared. The next time you print you should be prompted for your UNC Asheville Security credentials.

If printing still does not work correctly, proceed to Step Three to completely reset the printing system on the machine you're using.

Using the 'Complete Print System Reset' utility described below will remove all currently configured printer from the system, including any queues you've manually added, such as for personal, home, or special-use campus printers. You should only follow these steps after attempting all the above-listed remedies.

Perform a Complete Print System Reset

  1. Open the 'Self Service' application and log in using your current UNC Asheville Security credentials.
  2. Browse to the 'System Maintenance' category listed on the right side of the screen.
  3. Find the 'Complete Print System Reset' utility and click the 'Reset' button.
  4. Be sure to read the utility's explanation in full. This utility will perform the following actions:
    • Clears (deletes) all hung or pending print jobs. You will need to re-initiate any jobs you wish to print.

    • Removes all configured print queues. This includes any departmental, personal, or special-use printers.

  5. Click 'Reset' once more to run the utility.

Once the utility finishes running, you will have a single print queue labeled 'PRINT1-Find Me Printing' which will allow you to print to most Ricoh Multi Function Devices. If your department has opted out of managed printing services, your will need to contact ITS to have your department's printer manually reconfigured.
